YouTube Music Labels AI-Generated Tracks
YouTube Music launched new labels for AI-generated music on its platform.
"AI music is here, and YouTube's making sure you know it. Transparency is key as the lines blur between human and machine creativity."
YouTube Music has rolled out a new labeling system to increase transparency regarding songs created with generative AI. These labels will appear on the player page and identify tracks that are entirely or partially generated by AI, including AI involvement in composition and vocals. Clicking the label provides additional information about AI's role in the track's creation. This initiative extends to the main YouTube app.
YouTube collaborated with music partners and utilized its own detection tools to identify AI-generated music. Partners can declare AI use through three designations: Fully Gen AI, Partly Gen AI, or No Gen AI. "Fully Gen AI" applies to entirely AI-generated tracks, while "Partly Gen AI" covers works with incorporated AI-generated components alongside live elements. Tracks edited with pitch-correction tools like Auto-Tune fall under "No Gen AI."
This move comes as AI-generated music proliferates across streaming services. YouTube's approach focuses on disclosure rather than blanket restrictions, aiming to inform listeners about AI's role without making a track ineligible for monetization solely due to AI involvement. Other platforms are also adopting various strategies for AI-generated music.
This development impacts artists, labels, and streaming platforms by establishing clear identification for AI-generated content. It sets a precedent for transparency in the evolving landscape of music creation and consumption, potentially influencing content strategies and user engagement.
