Meta and Apple Partner on New AI Model for Macs
Meta launched Muse Spark Open, an AI model designed to run on Apple's Mac computers.
"Meta and Apple just teamed up on AI for Macs. Get ready for some serious local processing power on your desktop."
Meta has introduced Muse Spark Open, an open-weight AI model, which marks a collaboration with Apple. This new model is engineered to operate locally on Apple silicon, specifically optimized for Mac computers. Multiple outlets, including TechCrunch, The Verge, and CNBC, reported on this joint effort between the two companies.
Muse Spark Open is described by Meta as the "most capable US open-weight model to date," featuring 816 billion parameters and a 1 million token context window. It is natively multimodal and built for complex coding tasks and agentic labor. The model is designed to run best on Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra chip, requiring at least 1 terabyte of RAM for local operation.
This partnership brings an open-weight AI model to Apple's ecosystem, offering potential advantages in cost-efficiency, transparency, and flexibility compared to closed-source alternatives. Meta states the model can be deployed for various agentic workflows, including coding fixes and video editing tasks like reviewing and cropping footage in DaVinci Resolve.
This collaboration between Meta and Apple could significantly impact businesses relying on AI for coding, content creation, and other desktop tasks. The availability of a powerful open-weight model on Macs offers new opportunities for local AI processing and potentially more cost-effective solutions.
