Meta's Muse Spark Open AI Now Runs on Macs
Meta launched Muse Spark Open, an AI model designed to run locally on Apple silicon Macs.
"Meta and Apple are playing nice, bringing powerful AI directly to your Mac. Get ready for some serious local AI muscle on your desktop."
Meta has launched its new open-weight AI model, Muse Spark Open, which is designed to run locally on Apple silicon. This collaboration between Meta and Apple brings what Meta describes as the "most capable US open-weight model to date" to Mac users. The model is also noted as the "first model in its class" capable of running on desktops using Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studios with the latest MLX framework.
Muse Spark Open is natively multimodal and built for complex coding tasks and agentic labor. It leverages 816 billion parameters and a 1 million token context window, claiming superior performance. To run locally, the model requires significant power, including at least 1 terabyte of RAM, and is optimized for Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra chip. Meta has deployed it in various agentic workflows, including coding fixes and reviewing and cropping footage in video editing software.
This release marks a notable collaboration between Meta and Apple, historically considered rivals. The availability of an open-weight model like Muse Spark Open on Macs offers potential advantages such as cost-efficiency, transparency, and flexibility compared to closed, proprietary models. Meta is making the new model available through various API platforms.
This collaboration between Meta and Apple could signify a shift in how powerful AI models are deployed and accessed on desktop hardware. For businesses, the ability to run advanced open-weight AI models locally on Macs may offer greater control, data privacy, and potentially reduced operational costs for AI-driven tasks like coding and content creation.
