Spotify to Label 'AI Persona' Profiles, Exclude Music from Recommendations
Spotify will label 'AI Persona' profiles and exclude their music from recommendations.
"Spotify's drawing a line in the sand for AI artists. If you're AI, you're getting a badge and no free rides on the recommendation engine. Real artists, rejoice!"
Spotify is introducing "AI Persona" labels for artist profiles that represent AI-generated identities. This change will result in their music being excluded from editorial, algorithmic, and personalized recommendations by default. The labels will start rolling out in mid-September.
The "AI Persona" badge will appear on an artist's profile if they do not represent a real person. Spotify will review artist profiles and identify those with photorealistic AI-generated identities. Artists will be able to appeal an incorrectly applied label. Self-disclosure for artists will be available starting August 11, 2026, through Spotify for Artists.
This initiative expands Spotify's AI policies, which previously banned unauthorized AI voice clones and deepfakes. The company aims to balance AI innovations with managing low-quality content, ensuring a better user experience. Users will also be able to report artist profiles that appear to be AI Personas.
This move by Spotify signals a growing industry trend towards transparency regarding AI-generated content. Businesses in the music and creative industries should note the increasing need to differentiate authentic human-created work from AI-generated content, impacting content discoverability and audience trust.
