Google to Disclose AI-Generated Ads
Google will now disclose which ads are made with AI technology.
"Google's making advertisers fess up about AI. If your ad's fake, they'll tell everyone. Get ready for more transparency, whether you like it or not."
Google is introducing a new feature that will inform users when an ad they see was created using AI technology. This update, announced on Thursday, will add a "created or edited with AI" label within Google's "My Ad Center" for ads appearing on Google Search, Google Discover, and YouTube. Previously, Google only mandated such disclosures for election ads.
Users can access this information by clicking the three-dot menu or info icon on ads. If Google's generative AI advertising tools are used to create an ad, the disclosure will be automatically applied. However, for ads created elsewhere, advertisers must manually indicate AI involvement. Google will not independently verify if AI was used, though local laws may require AI labeling in some markets.
This change addresses the potential for AI to create synthetic or digitally altered content in ads, which, while not always misleading, can differ from real product photos. The feature aims to provide transparency to consumers regarding the origin of ad content.
This new Google feature impacts advertisers by requiring transparency around AI-generated content, potentially influencing creative strategies and consumer trust. Businesses must now consider how AI disclosures affect their ad performance and brand perception. Marketers will need to adapt their workflows to ensure compliance with these new labeling requirements.
