OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra, a new AI model, which the company believes could mark the start of the AGI era.
"OpenAI's new GPT-6 Astra is here, and they're calling it the start of AGI. Get ready, because this could change everything for how businesses operate."
OpenAI has released its new AI model, GPT-6 Astra, which the company describes as a "generational leap in capability." This model is designed for various sectors including cybersecurity, professional work, software engineering, science, and computer use. OpenAI announced that GPT-6 Astra is the first model to meet its "critical cybersecurity capability threshold."
OpenAI leaders, including president Greg Brockman, suggest that GPT-6 Astra could signify the beginning of the AGI era. The model is noted for its agentic capabilities and coding prowess, with the ability to complete multistep agentic tasks, build websites, and create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. It is also highlighted as OpenAI's "best model for software engineering." GPT-6 Astra is rolling out to cybersecurity customers today, and will be available to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users, as well as via the OpenAI API and AWS, in the coming days.
This release follows the launch of GPT-5 over a year ago and GPT-5.6 nearly two months prior. The company aims to attract enterprise customers and compete with other AI developers. OpenAI also stated that Astra is its "most aligned model yet," designed to help users delegate complex work while maintaining oversight.
GPT-6 Astra's advanced capabilities in areas like cybersecurity, software engineering, and computer use could significantly impact enterprise operations. Its ability to handle complex tasks and build functional tools may offer new efficiencies and competitive advantages for businesses.
