OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI AI Chatbots Experience Simultaneous Outages
ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok all experienced outages around the same time.
"Whoa, ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok all went down together? That's wild. Something's up, and nobody's talking."
OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, and xAI's Grok all went offline around the same time on Thursday. ChatGPT began experiencing issues around 11 AM ET, displaying error messages to users. The outage affected various functionalities including logins, file uploads, voice mode, search, deep research, and image generation. Anthropic's Claude chatbot, Claude Code, and the Claude API also experienced issues around the same time, with an Anthropic staff member citing an "infrastructure issue" for a partial outage, which was resolved around 12:15 PM ET.
Grok's outage started earlier, around 9:30 AM ET, affecting its Android, iOS, and web platforms. Users attempting to prompt Grok received messages indicating the model was overloaded. xAI linked this issue to an outage at its Memphis data center and has since resolved the problem. The outages occurred while OpenAI was teasing the launch of Astra, its new AI model.
It remains unclear what caused the simultaneous outages across these three major AI platforms, or if the incidents were related. Requests for comments from OpenAI, xAI, and Anthropic did not immediately receive responses. All three services have since been restored.
Simultaneous outages across major AI platforms highlight potential vulnerabilities in critical AI infrastructure. Businesses relying on these services for operations, customer interaction, or development could face significant disruptions and productivity losses. This event underscores the importance of understanding the stability and interconnectedness of AI service providers.
