ChatGPT Market Share Falls Below 50% For First Time
ChatGPT's market share has dropped below 50% for the first time, though it remains the leading AI assistant.
"ChatGPT's reign is being challenged! Users are ditching the OG for new AI assistants. Time to diversify your AI game."
ChatGPT's market share among AI assistants has reportedly fallen below 50% for the first time. Despite this, it maintains its position as the most popular AI assistant globally, with over 1.1 billion monthly users. Gemini follows with 662 million users, and Claude with 245 million users. This shift indicates a changing competitive landscape in the AI assistant market.
According to analytics firm Sensor Tower's State of AI Report for 2026, ChatGPT's market share dipped to 46.4% by May's end. This decline is attributed to the rise of competitors like Gemini, which holds 27.7% market share, and Claude, with 10.3%. Other assistants, including Grok, Perplexity, DeepSeek, and Meta AI, each hold less than 5% market share. Users are increasingly willing to switch between different AI assistants.
This development suggests a maturing AI assistant market where user loyalty is influenced by factors beyond just features, such as brand trust and values alignment. The industry is also seeing a shift towards monetization, with projected spending on AI apps reaching over $4.2 billion in the first half of 2026. Claude, in particular, shows strong user-retention and a leading subscription conversion rate of 13% among its users.
This shift signals increased competition and user willingness to explore alternative AI solutions. Businesses should note the growing importance of brand trust and monetization strategies in the evolving AI landscape.
