Anthropic Launches Opus 5, Rivals Fable 5 at Lower Cost

Anthropic has launched its new AI model, Opus 5, which is described as having capabilities close to Fable 5. Reports indicate Opus 5 is both cheaper and less restrictive than Fable, making it potentially preferable for many uses. Opus 5 also reportedly outperforms Fable 5 on several benchmarks and is available at half the price of Fable 5.
The release of Opus 5 follows Anthropic's latest interactions with the US government and an OpenAI security incident. The company stated that Opus 5 is "much stronger at verifying its work and iterating carefully until it succeeds." Opus 5 is also free from many restrictions that have affected Fable since its release and is not subject to a 30-day data retention policy. Safeguards on Opus 5 are expected to engage 85% less often than for Fable 5.
Anthropic is also introducing a beta feature called Automatic Fallbacks. This tool allows users to route requests to a less powerful model if a prompt triggers a safety classifier, providing a functional response instead of an error message for API users.
This launch signals a shift towards more economically viable and less restrictive AI models for enterprises. Businesses can potentially access advanced AI capabilities at a lower cost, improving operational efficiency and expanding AI adoption.
