Anthropic has launched Sonnet 5.5, the latest iteration of its mid-tier AI model. This release marks the company's second since its CEO's call for a slowdown in AI development. Sonnet 5.5 is described as a significantly cheaper and faster work partner, boasting faster response times and less token burn compared to its predecessor.

According to Anthropic, Sonnet 5.5 is 30% faster than its predecessor, Sonnet 5, which was released approximately three months prior. While Sonnet 5 focused on efficient agentic deployment at a lower cost, Sonnet 5.5's primary selling point is speed. It is positioned as an ideal assistant for everyday tasks, including coding and creating office documents. Anthropic's benchmarks indicate Sonnet 5.5 performs better than Opus 5.5 on agentic coding due to its ability to manage multiple agents within cost limits. The model also possesses significant cyber capabilities, comparable to Opus 5, and will be subject to the same cyber safeguards as Fable and Opus.

This launch comes as Anthropic continues to evolve its AI offerings, with Sonnet being less powerful than the Opus model but offering greater agility in certain scenarios. The company also plans to release a new version of Haiku, its smallest model, in the coming weeks. Amazon Web Services (AWS) has also introduced Claude Sonnet 5.5 on its platform, indicating broader availability and integration.
