OpenAI is building out an alternative to the traditional app store model by transforming ChatGPT into a platform for software discovery and usage. This initiative allows both people and AI agents to find and utilize software directly within ChatGPT. The company is expanding ChatGPT plug-ins with dedicated sidebar homes, interactive panels, file viewers, improved discovery, and support for automations.
ChatGPT will suggest apps during conversations when it identifies a relevant task, enabling users to connect and use apps directly within the chatbot. This is supported by an expanded plugin architecture that includes extensions, allowing developers to create interactive panels for their tools within ChatGPT. Developers can build AI-native versions of their apps through ChatGPT, similar to how they would for the open web or mobile app stores. Users can also bring their AI allowance with them via "Sign in with ChatGPT."
OpenAI also introduced improvements to the plugin submission process, allowing developers to track reviews and update tools without restarting submissions. A new enterprise app marketplace has been launched with over 30 partners, including Adobe and Figma, where eligible customers can apply their OpenAI commitment towards approved partner software.
