OpenAI Sunsets Atlas Browser, Shifts AI Features to Desktop and Chrome
OpenAI is shutting down its Atlas AI browser less than a year after launch, integrating features elsewhere.

OpenAI is discontinuing its AI-powered browser, Atlas, which was launched in October. Despite the shutdown, OpenAI is not abandoning its ambitions for AI-assisted web browsing. Instead, it plans to redistribute some of Atlas's agentic browsing features to its ChatGPT desktop application and a new Chrome extension.
The company confirmed the "sunsetting" of Atlas as part of news related to ChatGPT Work. The move comes less than a year after Atlas's announcement. The AI firm is now focusing on integrating browser-like agent capabilities into existing user workflows, including within Chrome and the ChatGPT desktop app.
The new ChatGPT extension for Chrome will allow users to interact with web pages, summarize content, and ask questions directly from the browser. Concurrently, the ChatGPT desktop app will receive a more robust browser, enabling users to browse websites, log into accounts, and download files without leaving the application. These updates aim to transform ChatGPT into a continuous workspace spanning various platforms.
This shift indicates a strategic move by OpenAI to integrate AI browsing capabilities directly into existing platforms rather than creating a standalone browser.
