Insta's take

"Another exec out the door at OpenAI. Is this just growing pains, or a sign of deeper issues? Keep an eye on that talent drain."

Chris Malone, OpenAI's head of data centers, has left the company. Malone joined OpenAI in March of last year and previously spent nearly five years at Meta and over a decade at Google. His departure follows a recent reorganization of OpenAI's infrastructure organization, which the company stated was to "support the scale and pace of our work." As part of this reorganization, Malone began reporting to OpenAI vice president Sachin Katti, who assumed leadership of the group, rather than directly to OpenAI president Greg Brockman.

Malone's exit is part of a series of executive departures at OpenAI this year, with Business Insider tallying 13 departures in 2026. Other recent high-profile exits include the chief revenue officer, Denise Dresser, and one of the longest-serving executives, Brad Lightcap. Fidji Simo, the product and business chief, also stepped down, citing a "chronic illness" but remains in an advisory role. The company has also seen departures from its safety and ethics teams, including the head of ethics, Chloé Bakalar, and reportedly disbanded its preparedness team.

OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman acknowledged the intense "spotlight" on the company, leading to scrutiny of every departure. However, the ongoing executive churn raises questions, particularly as the company prepares for a potential IPO. Several other executives, including Uday Ruddarraju, Brent Mayo, and Spas Lazarov, are reportedly overseeing OpenAI's data center strategy.

Why Insta thinks this matters

Executive departures, especially in critical infrastructure roles, can signal internal shifts or challenges. For businesses relying on OpenAI's services, this turnover could impact long-term stability and strategic direction, particularly concerning data center operations crucial for AI development and scaling.
