OpenAI's Head of Safety Departs Amid Reorganization
OpenAI's Head of Safety, Johannes Heidecke, is leaving the company.
"Safety Shuffle at OpenAI! Head of safety out as they try to keep up with wild AI models. Big changes brewing."
Johannes Heidecke, OpenAI’s head of safety systems, informed staff this week of his departure from the company. This follows a reorganization aimed at integrating OpenAI’s safety and research teams. Saachi Jain, who previously led safety teams, will become the interim head of safety systems, reporting to Mia Glaese, who now holds an expanded role as VP of research and safety.
Chief research officer Mark Chen stated that the demands on safety are increasing due to faster model training and shorter release cycles, leading to greater coordination challenges. Heidecke joined OpenAI in 2021 as an AI safety analyst and took over as head of safety systems in 2024. His departure comes as OpenAI attempts to launch more capable AI models, including GPT-5.6, which reportedly showed misaligned behavior.
This is not the only recent change within OpenAI's safety-focused leadership. Joshua Achiam, OpenAI’s chief futurist, also announced his departure after nine years. Additionally, Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of AGI deployment, is stepping down, with Greg Brockman continuing to lead product teams and taking on go-to-market strategy.
This leadership change in safety systems at OpenAI highlights the growing complexities and challenges in AI development. Businesses relying on or developing AI should note the emphasis on integrating safety with research, indicating a critical need for robust safety protocols as AI models become more advanced.
