Insta's take

"Meta's going all-in on custom AI chips! They're cutting out the middleman to power their AI future. Smart move to own the tech."

Meta is set to start production of its latest AI-specific chip in September, according to an internal memo cited by Reuters. This move is intended to help Meta lower GPU costs and increase its computing capacity. The company has been producing its own AI chips since 2023, with the new chips developed under its Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) program.

The chips are designed with a modular approach, anticipating evolving AI needs. Meta is collaborating with Broadcom on the chip design, while Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will handle manufacturing. The company is also sourcing RAM from Samsung, storage from Sandisk, and fiber-optic equipment from Sumitomo Electric. One chip reportedly passed its testing phase in approximately six weeks.

This initiative is part of Meta's substantial investment in AI, with capital expenditures projected between $125 billion and $145 billion this year. The MTIA chips are intended for training models for ranking and recommendation algorithms, broader AI workloads, and inference for its applications. Meta aims to deploy 7 gigawatts of compute this year, with plans to double that next year.

Why Insta thinks this matters

This development signifies Meta's strategic push for greater self-sufficiency in AI hardware, potentially reducing reliance on external GPU providers. For businesses, it highlights the increasing trend of major tech companies investing heavily in custom AI infrastructure to support their growing AI initiatives and control costs.
