Microsoft Unveils Maia 300 AI Chip
Microsoft announced its third-generation Maia 300 AI chip, designed for its products and services.
"Microsoft's new AI chip is a big deal. They're going all-in on their own tech to power AI, and it could change the game for their services."
Microsoft has unveiled its third-generation in-house AI chip, the Maia 300, intended to serve as the "primary AI inference system" for its various products and services. The company plans a large-scale deployment of these chips, with an expanded rollout scheduled from 2027. This move is aimed at improving the cost and efficiency of running AI workloads in the cloud, while also reducing Microsoft's reliance on external GPU providers.
The Maia 300 is designed to handle advanced AI tasks, including long-context reasoning, latency-sensitive conversational experiences, and sustained, multi-step agentic tasks. It is built on TSMC’s N2P process node and features a new chiplet architecture that separates compute, memory controller, and I/O functions. This design is expected to deliver significant efficiency gains, with Microsoft anticipating 40 percent more tokens per megawatt compared to leading GPU-based systems.
This development represents Microsoft's "biggest bet yet" on its own silicon, with plans to scale its Azure Maia family to multi-gigawatt deployments starting in 2027. The Maia 300 is a successor to the Maia 200, which is already in use for production AI workloads across Microsoft, including Copilot and GitHub Copilot. The company views this in-house chip as a critical component for its AI model work and its goal of advancing in the AI landscape.
This initiative could lead to more cost-effective and efficient AI services from Microsoft, potentially impacting businesses relying on their cloud infrastructure and AI tools. It signifies a strategic shift towards greater control over core AI technology, which could influence future AI product development and pricing.
