The Manhattan District Attorney's Office has seized 12 websites involved in sharing, publishing, and selling AI-generated deepfake videos. This action represents a significant legal move against harmful deepfake content, with the seized sites having depicted around 1,200 individuals, predominantly women, in nonconsensual sexual imagery. Victims included social media influencers, actors, activists, athletes, musicians, and politicians.
These websites, some online since 2018, hosted videos that often swapped the faces of celebrities and public figures into existing pornographic content. An analysis of 160 deepfake websites revealed that politicians in 22 countries, mostly women, have been targeted. The seizures were conducted under New York's criminal procedure laws, with investigations into those responsible for the websites and content uploads ongoing.
This takedown is considered one of the most substantial actions against explicit deepfake websites since the technology emerged in late 2017. Experts note that such enforcement demonstrates that harmful content can be effectively addressed, even with fragmented regulations across different jurisdictions. The seized domains now display takedown notices, indicating they are no longer accessible.
