Luis DeSantiago, a substitute teacher in Los Banos, California, discovered an AI photo circulating on social media that depicted him in lingerie. This incident initiated a monthslong ordeal involving students, administrators, and police, and DeSantiago is not the only educator affected.
DeSantiago identified a student from a local middle school as a potential source of the image, which was also shared on Snapchat. Despite disciplinary action for one student, the image continued to spread, leading to crude comments on DeSantiago's TikTok. He subsequently received an AirDropped image of the same deepfake at a high school, prompting an investigation, but DeSantiago states he likely won't return to the district this year due to safety concerns.
This situation highlights the vulnerability of educators to AI abuse, with teachers reporting profound distress and disappointment. The incidents have caused them to reevaluate their work and relationships with students. The dissemination of fake nude images of nonconsenting adults could be considered cyberstalking and a violation of the federal Take It Down Act.
