Deepfake Sites Target 100+ European Politicians, Mostly Women

An analysis of 160 deepfake websites reveals that almost 150 politicians across Europe have been featured on harmful deepfake pornography sites. The research, seen by WIRED, indicates that nearly all of these individuals are women. Specifically, at least 138 women members of parliament (MPs) from 22 European Union countries appeared or were mentioned, compared to only nine male MPs.
The research, conducted by Benjamin Shultz of Agora Digitale Transformation and the American Sunlight Project, compiled details of over 5,800 members of parliaments. It found that politicians from Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and France were most frequently targeted, with more senior politicians being more susceptible. The sites included explicit videos, names, photos, and links to deepfake creation tools, with some even featuring sections rating women's bodies and links to 'nudifier' apps.
This trend is viewed as part of a larger pattern of online hate and intimidation against women in politics, potentially damaging democratic practices and deterring women from public life. Suzanne Kröger and Sarah Dobbe, Dutch MPs impacted by these deepfakes, emphasize the disturbing nature of these findings and the need for support for victims and swift content removal.
This incident highlights the growing threat of deepfake technology to public figures, particularly women, and its potential to cause reputational and psychological harm. Businesses and platforms must consider robust content moderation and support systems to combat such abuse, as it can erode trust and participation in public life.
