Google Updates Privacy Policy: Gmail, Photos Data for Targeted Ads
Google's updated privacy policy allows Gmail and Photos data to be used for targeted ads.
"Heads up! Google's now using your Gmail and Photos for ads if you're deep into their AI. Time to check those privacy settings, fam."
Google has updated its privacy policy, potentially leading to targeted ads based on personal data from Gmail and Google Photos for users of personalized AI features. This update, noted by Android Authority, creates an exception to Google's previous commitment not to use Drive, Gmail, or Google Photos for personalized ads.
Effective October 16th, the policy now states that data from these services can be made available to other Google services supporting personalized ads, if users choose to connect them to AI Mode and other Search tools via Google’s Personal Intelligence feature. This allows tools to provide better responses and recommendations, but also means ads may be targeted based on that content. Advertisers do not gain direct access to personal information or identifying details, and ads will not be based on sensitive categories.
Users can manage their privacy by disconnecting specific apps from Search’s Personal Intelligence features or by disabling Personalized Recommendations entirely through the Search Services Personalization settings page. This change impacts users who leverage Google's AI features for a more personalized experience.
This policy update is crucial for businesses and marketers as it expands Google's data utilization for ad targeting, potentially increasing the precision of ad campaigns. Executives should assess their data privacy strategies and user communication regarding personalized AI features. It highlights the evolving landscape of data usage in AI-driven services.
