Google Commercial Imagines AI-Assisted Declaration of Independence

Google's new commercial envisions Founding Fathers using AI and Workspace for the Declaration of Independence.

A new Google commercial, titled "Group project, but make it 1776," imagines the Founding Fathers utilizing Google Workspace and AI tools like Gemini to draft the Declaration of Independence. The ad, released 250 years after the Declaration's signing, depicts a Google-centric collaboration process, including Google Docs edits, Google Calendar scheduling, and remote meetings via Google Meet. AI is shown helping visualize national seal animals and Gemini taking meeting notes.

The commercial portrays fictionalized founders asking Gemini for advice and declining King George III's document access request. While YouTube and Instagram comments appear largely positive, the response on Bluesky has been critical, with posters calling it "cringey" and "stunningly tone deaf." Historian Angus Johnston noted that "amazing how little of this is actually AI" and that it's "impossible to make the case that AI is a useful tool for political organizing, writing, or human collaboration."

This ad follows a previous Google commercial where a father used Gemini to write a fan letter. Unlike that instance, this new commercial avoids suggesting AI would improve the Declaration's actual text. The commercial's AI evangelism is described as relatively discreet compared to other recent ads, though the footage itself may have an AI-generated quality.
