Anthropic Raises $30B at $900B Valuation, Overtaking OpenAI
Anthropic secures $30 billion funding at $900 billion valuation, surpassing OpenAI's $852 billion for first time.
"The AI arms race just got real money behind it. When four top VCs each drop $2 billion and three have hedged with OpenAI too, they're betting the winner isn't obvious yet."
Anthropic has agreed to raise at least $30 billion at a valuation exceeding $900 billion, surpassing rival OpenAI for the first time, according to Financial Times reports from May 15-16. Greenoaks Capital, Sequoia Capital, Dragoneer, and Altimeter Capital are leading the round with $2 billion each, with the deal expected to close by month's end.
The valuation represents a stunning climb from $350 billion in January and $183 billion last fall, driven by explosive revenue growth. Annualized revenue hit $45 billion, up fivefold from $9 billion at end-2025, with forecasts reaching $50 billion by mid-2026. Enterprise customers now account for 80% of revenue, while Claude Code generates $2.5 billion annually.
The funding comes as Anthropic prepares for a potential October IPO and plans massive compute infrastructure investments. Three of the four lead investors have OpenAI ties, signaling that major players are hedging across multiple AI leaders rather than backing a single winner in the escalating race for AI dominance.
This marks a pivotal shift in AI leadership, with Anthropic's enterprise revenue growth demonstrating that business adoption is accelerating beyond hype into substantial spending. The $900 billion valuation and potential October IPO will set pricing benchmarks for the entire AI sector and influence enterprise software budgets across industries. Computing power access is becoming the critical competitive moat, requiring tens of billions in infrastructure investment.
