Insta's take

"OpenAI just became a consulting firm with a $4B war chest. Building better models doesn't matter if nobody can actually use them—this is the race now."

On May 11, 2026, OpenAI launched the OpenAI Deployment Company with over $4 billion in initial investment from 19 firms including TPG, Goldman Sachs, SoftBank, McKinsey, and Bain. The venture, valued at $10 billion pre-money, will embed Forward Deployed Engineers into organizations to build and deploy AI systems, acquiring Tomoro's 150-person team with clients like Mattel and Red Bull.

The move directly challenges traditional consulting firms and Indian IT service providers, causing shares of Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, and HCLTech to fall sharply. OpenAI Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser said enterprise now represents over 40% of revenue, expected to reach parity with consumer by year-end. The initiative responds to Anthropic's enterprise lead, which OpenAI executives called a "wake-up call" in internal meetings.

This signals the AI race has shifted from building better models to actual deployment. Despite $40 billion in generative AI spending over two years, only 5% of enterprises have demonstrated real business returns according to MIT research, making this deployment-first approach critical.

Why Insta thinks this matters

The bottleneck in AI is no longer technology—it's implementation. OpenAI embedding engineers directly into your business means the company that makes the tools now competes with the consultants who implement them. If only 5% of enterprises are seeing real ROI from AI spending, this deployment-focused model could finally bridge the gap between AI hype and business results.
