Anthropic IPO: Amazon Set for Billions, Burry Cites Slowing Growth
Anthropic files for IPO, revealing significant Amazon and Google stakes, while Michael Burry notes slowing revenue growth.
"Anthropic's IPO is a goldmine for Amazon, not just VCs. But Burry's calling out 'slowing' growth. Wall Street's about to get a crash course in AI doomsday prep."
Anthropic has filed documents ahead of its IPO, offering insights into its financials, risk factors, and future AI views. The S-1 filing indicates that while venture capital firms like Menlo Ventures, Sequoia, Sound Ventures, and Spark Capital are expected to gain billions, Amazon is positioned to be the single largest financial beneficiary. Amazon’s investment, largely structured as convertible notes, could convert into up to 1.84 billion shares, with its holdings valued at $97.9 billion as of June 30. Google is also set for a major windfall from its listing and cloud computing deals, having invested billions and secured significant cloud commitments.
The 335-page prospectus, however, has drawn scrutiny for missing several key financial figures, with one analyst stating Anthropic owes investors more information. Michael Burry, known for "The Big Short," has reviewed the IPO filing but stated it contains "nothing that changes" his view, specifically calling out "slowing" revenue growth. The filing also details Anthropic's complex governance structure and its elaborate plan to balance public market riches with its mission of developing AI safely.
Beyond stock gains, Amazon will continue to earn significant revenue, with Anthropic committing to spend at least $110 billion on AWS over the next decade. Similarly, Google has secured at least $114 billion in cloud commitments from Anthropic through 2033. The S-1 itself warns that some cloud providers also build rival AI models and may not always align with Anthropic's objectives, highlighting potential conflicts of interest for these major beneficiaries.
This IPO highlights the evolving landscape of AI funding, with tech giants securing massive stakes and strategic partnerships. Business leaders should note the complex financial structures and potential influence of major cloud providers, which could impact future AI development and market dynamics.
