SpaceX Secures $40 Billion AI Chip Financing Deal with Apollo
SpaceX secured a $40 billion deal with Apollo Global Management for AI chip and data center equipment financing.
"SpaceX just locked down a massive $40B for AI chips! They're not messing around, securing their AI future without relying on old-school debt. Big moves ahead!"
SpaceX has entered a $40 billion financing agreement with an entity managed by Apollo Global Management for AI chips and related data center equipment. This deal provides SpaceX with an alternative funding source for its expanding AI ambitions, moving beyond traditional debt markets. The agreement involves Apollo purchasing the equipment and then leasing it to SpaceX for approximately five to five-and-a-quarter years, with leases beginning in the first half of 2027.
This financing is expected to close by year-end and will support SpaceX's rapidly growing AI infrastructure, including its Grok chatbot, Cursor coding tool, and cloud compute business. SpaceX CFO Bret Johnsen noted the company is seeing "less than one-year payback periods" on its AI infrastructure investments. Apollo stated the financing will help deliver next-generation Vera Rubin chips for SpaceX's "terrestrial compute buildout."
The deal comes as SpaceX significantly increases spending on its AI infrastructure, alongside its Starlink and launch businesses. This lease diversifies SpaceX's funding and addresses a notable portion of the capital required for its growth plans, particularly amidst a challenging debt market for other AI infrastructure players.
This significant financing deal highlights the substantial capital required for AI infrastructure development and the innovative funding strategies companies are employing. It signals a shift in how large-scale AI ambitions are financed, potentially impacting market access for competitors.
