Scientists at Stanford University and the Arc Institute utilized foundational AI models, Evo 1 and Evo 2, to design 16 novel viruses. These AI models were trained on millions of genomes from various life forms to learn evolutionary patterns. The research focused on bacteriophages, which are viruses that infect bacteria, using the bacteriophage Phi X-174 as a guide to generate new genomes capable of infecting E. coli.

The AI-generated genomes, after selection and artificial synthesis, resulted in 16 fully functional bacteriophages with previously unpublished sequences, different genes, new regulatory elements, and varying genome sizes. These viruses demonstrated varied behaviors, including different infection speeds and replication abilities. The study, published in the journal Science, also showed that these AI-designed viruses could overcome bacterial resistance in E. coli strains.
