Hugging Face Launches AI Model to 'Chat with DNA'

Hugging Face has launched Carbon-X, a new open-source AI model developed in collaboration with researchers at Zhongguancun Academy in China and the University of Naples Federico II in Italy. This model allows users to interact with DNA using natural language, enabling questions about the effects of DNA changes on gene activity and health. Lewis Tunstall, a senior research scientist at Hugging Face, stated the tool aims to assist researchers in designing new drugs and genetic therapies.
Carbon-X integrates DNA and natural language in a conversational interface, similar to a 'ChatGPT for DNA.' The model was trained on 300 billion data tokens combining DNA sequences from various organisms, English text, and biological descriptions. It is designed to run locally on a laptop, addressing concerns about uploading sensitive patient data to cloud-based models. The model can ingest DNA sequences of approximately 50,000 base pairs.
This development could help scientists understand whether genetic mutations are benign or disease-causing, a critical step in developing targeted drugs or genetic therapies. The developers caution that the model has not yet been validated with wet lab experiments, so its accuracy is still to be determined. Hugging Face provides a platform for open-source AI applications, and Nvidia agreed to acquire the company for nearly $13 billion in September.
This new AI model offers a novel tool for biological research, potentially accelerating drug discovery and genetic therapy development. Its open-source nature and local operability could reduce barriers for researchers and businesses in the biotech sector.
