Insta's take

"The US government just flip-flopped on Anthropic's AI models. One minute they're banned, the next they're back. Make up your mind, Washington!"

The Trump administration has lifted export controls on Anthropic's Mythos 5 and Fable 5 AI models, reversing a two-week ban that had restricted access for foreign nationals. This decision allows Anthropic to restore global access to its advanced AI models, which were previously unavailable without special approval. The initial restrictions, implemented on June 12, had forced Anthropic to end public access to the models due to the impracticality of complying with the rule at scale.

Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick stated that Anthropic has agreed to proactively detect and address security risks, work with the US government on protocols and standards for current and future models, and inform the government of any malicious activity. Mythos was initially made available to select organizations in April, while Fable, with additional security guardrails, was released to the public in June. The ban had been criticized by cybersecurity experts who viewed it as leverage rather than a security fix.

This reversal comes as Asian AI companies begin to release their own AI models, such as Fugu and Tulongfeng, with capabilities approaching Mythos-level. The US government was reportedly under pressure to ease restrictions to ensure American AI competitiveness globally. The Trump administration's approach to AI policymaking has been described as erratic, leaving the industry with little clarity on future model releases.

Why Insta thinks this matters

This development signals a shift in US AI export policy, potentially impacting global competition and the accessibility of advanced AI models. Businesses relying on or developing AI can expect a more fluid regulatory environment, though uncertainty about future policies remains.
