"The White House just hobbled cybersecurity pros by banning Anthropic's AI. Our digital defenses are now weaker. Seriously, what gives?"

Dozens of cybersecurity experts have urged the White House to lift export-control restrictions on Anthropic’s Fable and Mythos AI models. They argue that the ban limits cybersecurity defenders' ability to secure software and products, calling the action "dangerous" as adversaries advance. The U.S. government ordered Anthropic to limit export of Fable and Mythos on June 12th, citing national security concerns, leading Anthropic to suspend global access.

Anthropic's Mythos model, launched as a preview in April, was initially restricted to approximately 50 companies, later expanding to 150 organizations in 15 countries, due to its power in finding security vulnerabilities. Fable, a public version released last week, included strict guardrails to prevent its use in biology, chemistry, cybersecurity, and distillation. The White House order may have stemmed from a report suggesting a method to bypass Fable's guardrails to unlock Mythos-level capabilities, though some experts dispute the validity of this "jailbreak."

Katie Moussouris, founder of Luta Security and a signatory of the open letter, stated that an Amazon research paper, which she reviewed, did not demonstrate a real jailbreak. She argued that the described behavior is crucial for defensive security, allowing AI to fix bugs and write tests. The open letter also suggested that similar model capabilities can be replicated on other AI models, including OpenAI’s GPT-5.5, Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 and Sonnet, and Chinese models like Kimi 2.7.

Why Insta thinks this matters

This dispute highlights growing tensions between government regulation and AI development, impacting the tools available for cybersecurity. Businesses relying on advanced AI for security may face limitations or delays in accessing cutting-edge defensive technologies, potentially increasing their vulnerability to cyber threats.
