OpenAI has introduced new voice models, GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini, aimed at creating more natural and simultaneous live conversations. These models are full-duplex, allowing them to speak and listen concurrently, which facilitates natural interruptions and features like live translation. The GPT-Live-1 mini will replace ChatGPT's current Advanced Voice Mode by default, with the larger GPT-Live-1 model available to users of paid tiers.
The company states these new models address issues such as interrupting users and insufficient intelligence in responses. They can also integrate with OpenAI's latest text models, like GPT-5.5, for enhanced search, reasoning, and agentic capabilities while maintaining conversation flow. OpenAI suggests that voice could become the primary interface for complex computing tasks, with reports indicating a potential AI-powered earbud launch this year.
OpenAI has been working to enhance its voice-based features, noting that over 150 million people currently use ChatGPT's voice and dictation features. While aiming for more natural interactions, the company emphasized that these models are not intended as AI companions and include safeguards for age-appropriate responses and resource provision for sensitive topics.
