OpenAI Developing 'Persistent' AI Agent for Proactive Tasks
OpenAI is developing a 'Persistent mode' for its Codex AI agent, enabling continuous, proactive work.
"OpenAI's new 'Persistent mode' means AI agents won't quit until the job's done. Get ready for AI that actually finishes what it starts."
OpenAI is developing a 'Persistent mode' for its Codex AI agent, a feature that allows the AI to continue working proactively until it is 'put to sleep.' This development was revealed through code changes to the command line version of Codex, reviewed by WIRED. While not broadly rolled out, new features often appear in this open-source repository before reaching other OpenAI products like the Codex desktop app and ChatGPT Work.
The 'Persistent mode' appears in Codex’s 'reasoning effort' menu and is described as one of OpenAI’s more computationally intensive settings. Unlike current modes that cease tasks after a set time, this new mode instructs the agent to proactively create and work on follow-up tasks across sessions, utilizing past user interactions and 'knowledge of the user.' The agent also has a tool to message users sparingly and is instructed to seek user approval for actions outside the user's system.
This feature represents OpenAI's effort to create AI agents that automate tasks across work and personal lives, a goal shared by companies like Anthropic and Meta. While currently, AI agents are largely used by software engineers, the tech industry anticipates a broader customer base. OpenAI hopes these advancements will increase adoption of its advanced AI models.
This development suggests a future where AI agents can autonomously manage and execute tasks over extended periods, potentially streamlining operations and increasing efficiency for businesses. Companies could leverage such persistent agents for continuous workflow automation, reducing manual oversight and freeing up human resources for more strategic initiatives.
