Nvidia's New Cooling System Aims to Cut Data Center Water Use

Nvidia announced a new cooling system to reduce data center water usage.

Nvidia has introduced a new cooling system designed to decrease water consumption within data centers. This system, part of the Rubin generation reference design, is described as a fully liquid-cooled data center solution. Nvidia states that this warm-water cooling system can significantly reduce the amount of water a data center uses, with one executive claiming it eliminates "pretty much all water usage" inside the data center.

The new system operates by pumping coolant into racks at 45°C (113°F), which then emerges at 55°C (131°F) after passing through servers. This temperature allows outside air in most climates to draw heat off passive radiators without requiring evaporative cooling or fans. While this system aims to deliver a 100% reduction in on-site water use in favorable climates, it primarily addresses water consumption within the data center's walls.

However, this solution does not address the larger issue of water use associated with electricity generation, particularly from fossil fuel power plants that supply a significant portion of data center power. Critics note that the new system's impact on AI's overall water problem is limited, as it doesn't account for the water consumed in the production of the electricity that powers these data centers.
