According to The New York Times, this gas-burning plant is permitted to release 33 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, surpassing any other U.S. power plant. The new power plant is intended to power Amazon's West Texas data center. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the data center will be powered by "new on-site generation that won’t raise electricity costs for Texas families." This development comes as AI has already contributed to a 16% increase in Amazon’s carbon emissions last year, moving in the opposite direction of its pledge to eliminate carbon emissions by 2040. The spokesperson stated, “The world looks different now than when we co-founded the climate pledge,” while maintaining, “Our commitment hasn’t changed.”
This project highlights a growing trend where tech companies are backing large natural gas plants to support the increasing power demands of their data centers.
