French AI lab Mistral AI announced a €3 billion funding round, setting a new record for European technology companies. This Series D round, which values the company at over €21 billion, was led by Samsung Electronics, with EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity also participating as co-leads. The funding will be utilized to expand compute capacity, build infrastructure, accelerate commercial growth, and broaden its international presence.
The capital infusion supports Mistral's strategic shift towards sovereign, open-weight AI, aiming to reduce reliance on U.S. technology. The company plans to build 1 GW of compute capacity in Europe by 2030 and offers tools allowing customers to choose regional AI query processing. Mistral also hosts third-party, open-weight AI models, including Chinese ones, to bolster its position as an AI services provider focused on customer control.
This funding round highlights the geopolitical importance of AI, with French President Macron noting it reflects a goal of "building a third way in AI." While Mistral works with U.S. partners like Microsoft and has American investors such as a16z, Nvidia, Salesforce Ventures, Advent, and BlackRock, its international cap table, including new backer Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, reinforces its global ambitions beyond France.
