CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Meta's chief AI officer, Alexandr Wang, have showcased Jolly in various forms, including a toga and suggestive situations.

Youth advocates, such as Josh Golin of Fairplay, argue the mascot's 'rounded shapes' and 'adorable aesthetic' are designed to appeal to young children. Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts states the design aims for 'joy' and allows users to 'create their own avatar.' Mona Sarantakos, VP of Product Management at Meta Superintelligence Labs, described the design as 'delightful,' aiming to be less 'awkward' than interacting with a 'corporate logo.' Meta plans to release a Tamagotchi-style device for the Muse character later this year.

This design choice raises questions about user perception, especially given Meta's recent social media addiction settlement. Experts like Julian De Freitas suggest 'cute factors' can make products 'less threatening,' potentially disarming users. Jathan Sadowski notes that 'design features like being cute' can make people 'drop their guard' and become 'passive users,' potentially overlooking privacy concerns, as Meta trains its AI models on Muse interactions unless users opt out.
