Leftist Split Emerges Over AI Doom and Regulation

An ideological split has emerged on the American left concerning AI, particularly regarding the need for regulation and the extent of AI's potential dangers. This division centers on whether to prioritize theoretical future harms, including existential threats, or current, real-world issues caused by AI.

On September 10, the New York City Democratic Socialists of America's Tech Action Working Group posted on Instagram, arguing that "AI alarmism and AI hype are the same story" and distract from present harms. This post, which garnered over 25,000 likes, faced criticism, with some comments stating that "sounding the alarm is justified." Conversely, Senator Bernie Sanders has actively engaged with AI safety concerns, linking a data center moratorium bill to the need for federal regulation to protect "the future of humanity." Alexander McCoy, a Democratic strategist, supports addressing both current and future AI harms simultaneously.

This split highlights differing approaches to AI regulation within the left. Some, like Alan Dang of Tech Action, believe that focusing on speculative future dangers empowers AI companies and diverts attention from regulating existing harms. Others, following Sanders' lead, contend that it is possible and necessary to address all potential harms, from job loss to existential threats, concurrently. This has led to unusual alliances for Sanders and has influenced messaging from some left-wing political candidates.
