Google Pulls Earth AI Feature Amid Misinformation Concerns

Google launched a new AI feature for Google Earth on Thursday, allowing users to generate and superimpose AI imagery over real maps using text prompts. This tool, intended for creative geographic exploration, quickly drew criticism for its potential to spread misinformation.
Digital Digging's Henk van Ess demonstrated this by creating images like "refugees near the Mexican border" and a bomb crater. Critics, including a BBC journalist, highlighted the risk of abusing the feature, which essentially enabled the creation of "AI deepfakes of the real world." The tool allowed anyone to generate fake imagery and overlay it on Google Earth's satellite, aerial, and 3D imagery.
Within 24 hours of its release, Google axed the feature. The company stated it observed "geospatial professionals using this feature for a range of useful purposes," but also noted "people sharing screenshots of generated imagery that appear to violate our policies." Google announced it is rolling back the feature to implement "stronger guardrails."
