Google Home Opens to AI Agents

Google Home now allows AI agents like Claude and ChatGPT to control devices.

Google has launched early access to a new Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for Google Home, enabling AI agents such as Claude, ChatGPT, and OpenClaw to control connected devices and access smart home activity. This integration allows users to manage their smart home using natural language instructions, including reviewing camera summaries and monitoring activity. The system supports all devices within the Google Home ecosystem, including Google Nest and "Works with Google Home" devices.

To utilize this feature, users need to create a Google Cloud project, configure it for Home MCP, and then provide the configuration details to their chosen AI agent. The agent will then request sign-in and permissions. This access is rolling out to subscribers of Google Home Premium Advanced in the U.S., a $20-per-month subscription tier offering features like extended video history and detailed alerts. Google is also seeking feedback from early adopters through its Smart Home for Developers Community.

Google already uses MCP in other areas of its business, including Google Cloud, data platforms, developer tools, and Google Workspace. This specific support for Google Home is aimed at consumers experimenting with AI agents for everyday tasks. The company has not commented on broader rollout plans for other subscription tiers or markets.
