DeepSeek Nears $7.4 Billion First-Ever Funding Round at $59B Valuation

DeepSeek is finalizing a 50 billion yuan raise from Tencent, CATL, and founder Liang Wenfeng, valuing it up to $59 billion.

Insta's take

"DeepSeek just went from scrappy underdog to $59B juggernaut. Chinese AI is fully in the game now — and it's cheaper than anything out of San Francisco."

DeepSeek, the Chinese AI lab that rattled Silicon Valley earlier this year, is closing in on its first-ever external funding round worth approximately 50 billion yuan ($7.4 billion USD). The deal is expected to close within weeks and would value the company at between $52 billion and $59 billion. Founder Liang Wenfeng is personally committing 20 billion yuan ($2.9 billion), signaling strong insider conviction.

Tencent Holdings is considering a 10 billion yuan stake, while battery giant CATL is eyeing 5 billion yuan, making them the largest outside investors. Gaming company NetEase and e-commerce platform JD.com are also participating. Notably, DeepSeek has never taken external capital before, making this a landmark moment for the company and for Chinese AI broadly.

The raise underscores DeepSeek's rapid rise as a credible global AI competitor. Its V3 and R1 models earned rare praise from U.S. engineers, built at a fraction of the compute cost of rivals. With Anthropic now valued near $965 billion post-IPO filing, this round positions DeepSeek as a formidable, capital-backed challenger to Western AI dominance — optimized for Huawei chips and increasingly insulated from U.S. export controls.

Why Insta thinks this matters

DeepSeek's valuation and backer list signal that Chinese AI is no longer a distant second — it's a well-funded, technically credible rival. Businesses evaluating AI vendors should monitor DeepSeek's model roadmap closely, especially given its cost efficiency advantages. Executives in AI-dependent industries may face new pricing pressure as competition intensifies globally.
