Chinese Startup Moonshot AI to Release Powerful New AI Model
Moonshot AI is set to release Kimi K3, a new AI model with 2-3 trillion parameters.
"Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 is coming for the big players. Open-source just got a major upgrade, and it's about to shake things up."
Moonshot AI, a Chinese startup, is expected to release its Kimi K3 AI model in the coming days. The Financial Times reports that Kimi K3 will be the largest open-weight AI model from China, with a parameter count between 2 trillion and 3 trillion. This new iteration is anticipated to perform comparably to or even surpass Anthropic’s Opus 4.8, aiming to close the gap with closed-source models from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.
The company's previous Kimi K2 models have been well-received in the open-source AI market, demonstrating strong capabilities. Moonshot AI is also reportedly raising fresh capital, with a valuation of $31.5 billion. In May, the company raised $2 billion at a $20 billion valuation.
This development comes amidst ongoing discussions about the value of expensive, closed-source AI models. Industry leaders have expressed concerns about AI labs potentially extracting client data and are suggesting alternatives such as cheaper open-source models from companies like DeepSeek, Z.ai, or Moonshot, which can be trained for specific purposes.
This new model could offer a powerful open-source alternative to existing closed-source AI, potentially reducing costs and increasing control for businesses. It highlights a growing trend towards more accessible and customizable AI solutions, impacting strategic technology decisions.
