With an estimated parameter count between 2 trillion and 3 trillion, Kimi K3 is expected to rival or surpass Anthropic’s Opus 4.8. Moonshot AI is also reportedly seeking new capital, which could value the company at $31.5 billion, following a $2 billion raise in May at a $20 billion valuation.

The discussions around global AI governance and China's advancements in AI, particularly with open-source models like Kimi K3, highlight a growing debate on the value of proprietary versus open-source AI. Industry leaders are exploring alternatives to expensive, closed-source models, with some recommending cheaper open-source options like those from Moonshot for custom training.
