Apple Rebuilds Siri From Scratch With Gemini Deal Ahead of WWDC
Apple will unveil a fully redesigned Siri in iOS 27, powered by Google Gemini and supporting third-party AI model switching.
"Apple just turned Siri into an AI app store. Pick your model — Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude. The walled garden just got a lot of new doors."
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman published an exclusive look at iOS 27 on May 28, 2026, revealing Apple's most significant Siri overhaul in the assistant's history, ahead of WWDC on June 8. The redesigned Siri arrives as a standalone app with chat history, file and photo uploads, and a chatbot-style interface accessible via the Dynamic Island or a new 'Search or Ask' swipe-down gesture.
Underpinning the redesign is a landmark deal with Google, signed in late 2025, in which Apple licensed Gemini as Siri's foundational AI model for approximately $1 billion per year. Users will also be able to route queries directly to ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Anthropic Claude via a drop-down selector — and iOS 27 may allow system-wide AI model switching across the platform.
The rollout is not without legal turbulence. OpenAI is pursuing a breach-of-contract claim against Apple, alleging its ChatGPT integration was deliberately buried. Apple separately completed a $250 million settlement after nearly two years of litigation delays. iOS 27 is expected to ship in September alongside new iPhone hardware.
Enterprises heavily embedded in Apple's ecosystem should prepare for a multi-model AI environment where Siri becomes a router — not just an assistant. IT and procurement teams will need policies around which AI providers employees can invoke natively on company devices. The $1B Gemini licensing deal also signals that Apple is conceding foundational AI development to external partners, reshaping competitive dynamics across the industry.
