Alibaba Unveils 'Most Powerful' AI Model Amid US-China Competition

Alibaba released its largest and 'most capable AI model to date,' Qwen3.8-Max.

Chinese tech giant Alibaba has launched its Qwen3.8-Max AI model, which it claims rivals top systems from US labs like Anthropic and OpenAI, as well as domestic competitors such as Moonshot AI's Kimi K3. The company stated it is making the model widely accessible, with an open-weights release planned for next week. Alibaba's own testing suggests Qwen3.8-Max's performance broadly matches or exceeds Anthropic's Fable 5 on benchmark tests, and it ranks highly on the crowdsourced model-comparison platform Arena.AI.

Qwen3.8-Max boasts 2.4 trillion parameters, a measure of the settings a model learns during training. This release marks Alibaba's return to open-weight models for its advanced AI, a strategy increasingly common in China's AI industry. Moonshot AI also recently released its Kimi K3 model with 2.8 trillion parameters, and other Chinese firms like ByteDance and MiniMax have introduced new video generation models.

This launch intensifies the competition between US and Chinese firms in the AI sector, with Chinese companies appearing to rapidly narrow the technological gap. The focus on open-weight releases in China is seen as a way to grow its influence in global AI governance and promote domestic tech. The US industry is largely advocating for preserving access to open-weight models, citing both safety and competition concerns.
