Before OpenAI launched its new AI agent, Dots, on Tuesday, Elon Musk's xAI had already acquired the domain name "dot.com." This domain now redirects to the download page for xAI’s Grok chatbot app. The internet is convinced that xAI's acquisition of the domain was a deliberate troll of OpenAI's product launch.
According to the Whois domain owner registry, the "dot.com" domain name was transferred in July. While it's possible xAI bought the domain for reasons such as catching mistyped searches, the internet's theory suggests a prank. An anonymous X user and xAI watcher @birdabo was reportedly the first to spot the domain name in a viral post.
OpenAI's new product, Dots, is described as an always-on AI agent with a blobby avatar. The "dots.com" domain, a more direct fit for the product name, currently belongs to a long-defunct company. The timing and redirection of "dot.com" have led to widespread speculation regarding xAI's intentions.
