US Bans China's DeepSeek AI from Government Systems
The US has banned federal agencies from using China's DeepSeek AI tools due to national security concerns.
"Uncle Sam just dropped the hammer on DeepSeek AI for government use. If your business uses AI, better check where it's from – national security is the new buzzword."
The United States has ordered federal civilian agencies to remove DeepSeek products and third-party services built using its technology from their systems. This directive cites national security concerns related to the Chinese AI startup's operations. The ban extends to both new purchases and existing IT systems, though agencies can request exceptions.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) raised concerns regarding DeepSeek's handling of user data, warning that sensitive information from US government users could potentially be accessible to Chinese authorities under Chinese law. China has defended DeepSeek, with its Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stating that Beijing opposes "overstretching the concept of national security and politicizing technology and trade issues," and will "resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises.
This move intensifies the ongoing tech competition in AI between the US and China. A law passed in December 2025 had already targeted DeepSeek's use in intelligence's national security systems, and this latest order expands those restrictions. DeepSeek has faced scrutiny since its R1 reasoning model emerged in January 2025, and has been accused by the US, OpenAI, and Anthropic of using model distillation to extract information from American AI systems.
This ban highlights escalating geopolitical tensions impacting technology adoption and supply chains. Businesses relying on AI tools must scrutinize their vendors' origins and data handling practices to mitigate regulatory and national security risks. The move underscores the growing importance of understanding international tech policies for operational continuity.
