US and Chinese officials have initiated discussions regarding a mechanism for notifying each other of artificial intelligence incidents that could pose national security threats. This framework, termed the US China AI Dialogue, aims to increase transparency between the two leading AI powers. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that representatives from both countries would meet again to discuss the technology, seeking to align on common goals and threats.
The discussions follow previous talks during US President Donald Trump's visit to Beijing in May. Public safety concerns surrounding AI have intensified since then, with security incidents, such as OpenAI's agents hacking Hugging Face, highlighting the capabilities of frontier models and the inadequacy of existing safeguards. Fears escalated further after Anthropic employees warned about AI's potential to wipe out humanity.
Leaders from major AI laboratories, including OpenAI's Sam Altman, Anthropic's Dario Amodei, and Elon Musk, have called for a slowdown in AI development to establish safety standards. Amodei has specifically requested government assistance for international coordination, including with the Chinese Communist Party. However, Trump has largely dismissed these calls, emphasizing that "WHOEVER WINS AI, WINS!" and that a slowdown could cede the US lead to China.
