Tech Leaders Agree to Self-Police AI Safety Under Trump Deal

Top tech executives have agreed to self-regulate their artificial intelligence technology under a new accord, the Joint Commitment on Frontier Responsibilities. Announced by President Trump, the deal was signed by Google’s Sundar Pichai, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI’s Greg Brockman, XAI’s Elon Musk, and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, along with Trump himself.
The agreement outlines four rules for companies, including implementing robust internal controls for monitoring AI capabilities and alignment, empowering internal teams for oversight, partnering with independent external auditors, and designating an independent board committee for remediation. These steps aim to ensure models behave as intended and address concerns around AI safety, with a mention that these steps may eventually be codified into laws or regulations.
However, the rules are described as mostly vague, common-sense safety procedures without penalties for violations. This has led some to characterize the accord as a "pinky promise," especially given past instances where Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic reportedly violated similar safety principles.
