A hacker gained access to Suno's source code using an employee's credentials, which revealed how the company obtained decades of audio from sources including YouTube Music, Deezer, and Genius, as reported by 404 Media.
Suno had previously stated it trains its AI on “publicly available music files” and claims fair use for copyrighted material. However, major record labels are suing Suno, arguing that circumventing YouTube’s data scraping protections violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and YouTube’s terms of service. The hacker also reportedly accessed customer data, including emails, phone numbers, and partial credit card numbers.
Suno described the November 2025 incident as a “limited security incident that was quickly contained” and did not notify customers. This situation highlights ongoing legal and ethical debates surrounding AI training data acquisition, particularly concerning copyrighted material and data scraping practices.
