Substack Launches AI Detection Tool for Newsletters

Substack has launched a new feature that integrates with AI writing detection software Pangram. This tool allows users to scan posts, notes, replies, and comments within the Substack app to receive an estimate of how much of the content was written by AI or with AI assistance. The feature is available for content exceeding 100 characters.
This move signals a broader shift towards transparency regarding AI-assisted content. Substack also allows writers to include an optional AI author's note to disclose their use of AI. The company clarified that the tool aims to encourage disclosure and explain the creation process, rather than to prohibit or penalize AI-assisted writing. Publishers can also use Pangram on drafts before publication and report or remove scans they believe are incorrect.
While this could potentially expose newsletters not entirely written by humans, Substack views it as a long-term strategy to maintain trust and quality. CEO Chris Best stated that software should handle everything except the "hard part" – the original idea – which he believes should come from a person. This aligns with a trend of platforms labeling AI-generated content.
This development highlights the growing need for transparency in content creation. Businesses and marketers leveraging AI for content should prepare for increased scrutiny and consider proactive disclosure to maintain audience trust and platform compliance.
