Qualcomm has acquired the chip startup Modular for nearly $4 billion, with the deal expected to close in the second half of this year. Modular, founded by Chris Lattner and Tim Davis, specializes in a chip software platform and a proprietary coding language for AI software. This acquisition follows Modular raising $250 million at a $1.6 billion valuation nine months prior. Qualcomm expects to issue up to 19.2 million shares of common stock for the acquisition.
This move signals Qualcomm's expansion beyond mobile devices into the data center market, where it is also developing custom ASIC designs and has acquired Ventana Micro Systems. Concurrently, Micron has surpassed Meta and Tesla in market value, driven by the relentless demand for AI infrastructure. Qualcomm has also raised its data center outlook due to AI demand and announced Meta as a major launch partner for its new Dragonfly AI chips.
Modular's technology aims to create a unifying software layer for GPUs and CPUs, challenging existing systems like Nvidia's CUDA and AMD's ROCm. The acquisition integrates Modular's team, including its 150 employees, into Qualcomm, further solidifying Qualcomm's push into the AI and data center sectors.
